DANGERS TO BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF

DANGERS TO BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF

Pushed by the murmurings of what you should do,
would do and won’t do because someone said to,
Let’s count the ways they put your true self in danger:

Listening to murmurings from the dead,
Comes the hangover of who you should be, what you must do.

Wanting to please the living,
Comes specious success that meets their needs.

Trying to meet your own sense of what a good girl or boy you are,
Comes the ballast of politically correct beliefs other than yours.

Feeling regret at not fulfilling that endless list of what you would do,
Comes the impossible expectations that generate guilt.

Embracing the opposite of what others dictate,
Comes a choice no longer yours.

Wanting to parade the looks and labels that impress others,
Comes the pass to their world.

Consider all this
to decide what you want.
